The 2016 WSTDA Fall Meeting schedule
features opportunities for industry education, networking, and
discussions on technical issues; Technical Committees will also work on
recommended standards review and development. Hosted at the Hotel
Chicago in a central downtown location, the hotel is offering special
WSTDA group room rates, putting WSTDA attendees in the center of all
that Chicago has to offer.
PROGRAM FEATURES FOR FALL 2016:
WSTDA’s four Technical
Committees will each hold working sessions, to drive current
projects such as WSTDA Recommended Standards reviews, and
Discussion Forums, where attendees have the opportunity to
submit discussion topics in advance.
An Educational Session will
feature a presentation by Bradley D. Closson, chair of the
ASME B30 Committee and a mechanical engineer with over 30
years’ experience in material handling operations. Closson
will provide invaluable information for manufacturers,
should they find their products are involved in an accident
and therefore expose them to liability issues.
Networking… during the
interactive Discussion Forums, open Technical Committee
meetings, and social events after busy days of programming.
A special cocktail cruise showcasing Chicago’s legendary
architecture, while navigating through the heart of the city
on all three branches of the Chicago River, will offer even
more networking—all included in the registration fee.

group rate must be made no later than 5:00 PM Eastern on September 11,
2016 or when the group room block fills, whichever comes first.

2016 Annual Meeting Recap
WSTDA gathered on the Riverwalk in historic San Antonio for the 2016
Annual Meeting this past May. The meeting provided educational and
networking opportunities, participation in committee meetings, and the
opportunity to explore the beautiful city of San Antonio.
Officers, Directors Elected at 2016 Annual Meeting
The members of WSTDA elected the 2016-2018 Board of Directors at the
2016 Annual Meeting. The Board of Directors also appointed the
association’s Officers for 2016-2017.
Jeff Iden, Cargo Equipment Corporation, Elgin, IL continues his term as
President of the Association. Supporting Iden is a strong cabinet of
Officers including Vice President Greg Pilgrim, Murdock Webbing Co.,
Inc., Central Falls, RI and Secretary/Treasurer Jim Bailey, Filtec
Precise Inc., Tabor City, NC.
The 2016-2017 Board of Directors includes Scott Fleming, Unirope
Limited, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; Karl Heinz Keisewitt, Doleco

WSTDA 2016-2017 Scholarship
Program Awards Two Education Grants
Scholarship Program, launched in 2013 and promoted widely to qualified
WSTDA-member employees and their legal dependents, attracted nearly 30
applicants who competed for two merit-based awards of $3,000 each to
help with tuition and educational expenses for attendance at a qualified
college or university.
The 2016-2017 Scholarship recipients are:
Andrew T. Conley, an April 2016 graduate of Michigan
Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering, who is now pursuing a Master of Science in Mechanical
Engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Andrew earned a
3.98 GPA while at Michigan Tech, and also completed several internships,
one in the role of project manager of a team of 50+ engineers working to
design, build, and test a functioning satellite for launch into space on
a Department of Defense rocket. Andrew was sponsored by his father, Bill
Conley, who works in Internet Sales at Wiscolift, Inc. Andrew was also a
2014-2015 WSTDA Scholarship Program grant recipient.
Judy Lan Wei, an undergraduate at the University of South
Carolina-Columbia pursuing a triple major in International Business,
Global Supply Chain & Operations Management, and Marketing (with a minor
in Data Analytics), carries a GPA of 3.98 and is currently working for
Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Seattle, WA as a Procurement Intern.
Following her anticipated 2017 graduation, she plans to pursue a
Master’s in Supply Chain Management after working in industry for a few
years. Judy was sponsored by her father, Yan Wei, Division Controller
for Columbus McKinnon Corporation.
Eleven WSTDA member organizations sponsored Scholarship applicants, many
sponsoring multiple applicants. Member representatives were informed of
the program via the WSTDA website, newsletter, direct email messages,
and through announcements at the 2016 Annual Meeting.
The program is currently funded by the WSTDA operating budget, and
donations are welcome to ensure its continued success. To make a

President and CEO for Bishop Lifting Products
King, with 24 years of industry experience with Bishop Lifting Products
and most recently Vice President, has been named President and CEO of
Bishop Lifting Products. Bishop specializes in the fabrication,
distribution and rental of slings, wire rope, hoists, and rigging
products with 15 regional operations primarily in the Gulf Coast region
and is a WSTDA Regular Member.

WSTDA has welcomed seven new members since we published the last issue

Injury and Illness Rule a Major Win for Manufacturers
The Department of Labor last month announced a delay in enforcement of
OSHA’s new injury and illness rule until November 1, 2016, soon after
the filing of a memorandum and emergency motion by the Manufacturers
Center for Legal Action (MCLA) seeking to enjoin the implementation of
WSTDA Quick Pulse Survey:
2016 1st and 2nd Quarter Analysis
2016 1st and 2nd Quarter “Quick Pulse Survey” responses reflect the
continuing trend of even-keel demand for web slings, roundslings, and
tie downs, and a higher rate of rising demand for components and
material supplies during the first half of 2016. Profit margins on web
slings show an uptick while roundsling profit margins reflect a slight
downward trend. Exports of web slings, roundslings and tie downs are all
performing solidly, with 85% of respondents reporting even performance
compared to the prior year and the remainder reporting an uptick in

has grown to over 660 industry professionals, sharing knowledge and news
