40th Anniversary of WSTDA to Mark 2013 Annual Meeting

In 2013, WSTDA celebrates its 40th year of service to the industry. We’re planning to mark this milestone during the 2013 WSTDA Annual Meeting, where in addition to the technical meetings, educational and business sessions, and networking that are always highlights, we will take a look back at the long and proud history of WSTDA, its accomplishments, and especially its members. WSTDA Test Method Spec Posted for Public Comment

WSTDA's Testing Committee has completed the draft of the newly-developed "Recommended Standard Specification for Tensile Strength & Elongation Test Method for Sling & Tie Down Webbing" and has won Board approval to post the draft specification for public comment.

The draft is now available for public comment through February 15, 2013. Please visit WSTDA’s website to view the draft and download a form to submit public comment.

Board Appoints New WSTDA Vice President

Following the appointment of 2012-2013 Officers by the Board in October, a vacancy was created in the Vice President role due to the recent resignation from Kinedyne by Ralph Abato. The Board has appointed Greg Pilgrim of Murdock Webbing Co., Inc. to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Pilgrim was elected to the Board in 2010 and re-elected to a second term in 2012.

Compliance Issues Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act

There is far more to IRCA (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986) than having new hires fill out the I-9 forms. The IRCA of 1986 does primarily three things: 1) it requires employers to fill out I-9 forms for new hires, evidencing their authorization to work in the US; 2) it prohibits discrimination on the basis of citizenship and national origin; and 3) it prohibits retaliation for exercising rights under IRCA. Houston Wire & Cable Co. receives "Import Customer of the Year" Award

In November 2012, Houston Wire & Cable Co., a division of WSTDA Member Southwest Synthetic Systems, was named the ‘Import Customer of the Year’ by Mallory Alexander International Logistics. The Mallory Group is an international freight forwarder and customs brokerage firm that offers state of the art logistical solutions. Southern Wire, a division of HWC, began

working with the Mallory Group more than 8 years ago. In 2008, Southwest Wire Rope, a division of HWC, was introduced to the group followed by HWC’s corporate offices in 2010.

Southwest Wire Rope Continues to Grow Sales Department


Brandon Thompson

Southwest Wire Rope, a division of WSTDA Member Southwest Synthetic Systems, is pleased to announce the addition of Brandon Thompson to its Houston sales office. Thompson holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Belhaven University and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Business Admin. Thompson served in the United States army for 4 years. After returning from Iraq in 2006, he began his career in sales.

Bishop Lifting Products Branch Moves Into New Facility

Bishop Lifting Products Lafayette is proud to announce its recent move from New Iberia to Broussard in late November. The new 12,500 square foot building sits on 4.5 acres south of Lafayette, LA. Along with a 500,000 lb. test bed there is a 500 ton ESCO swagger along with a 500 ton National and a 20,000 lb. walk through spooling machine. This facility expansion will allow the Lafayette branch to grow in Louisiana as well as along the Gulf Coast. Vern McGehee, Branch Manager in New Iberia, says "we have needed this move for a while. This new space allows for greater inventory, new testing facilities and more employees." The new facility is an ISO 9001:2008 certified location.

Chant Engineering Breaks Ground on 25,000 Sq. Ft. Facility Addition, Expands Executive Team

Chant Engineering Co. hit the ground running in 2013. Breaking ground last month on a 25,000 sq. ft. manufacturing building addition, the company is doubling its manufacturing space to over 50,000 sq. ft. Chant, which partnered with TALURIT AB in 2012 as its authorized North American distributor, will use this space to house the full line of Talurit Swagers, Dies and other products and inventory, while continuing to grow its testing equipment production. In addition, Chant just finalized a partnership with Friedrich Hoppe GMBH in Germany, and is now the authorized stocking distributor for Hoppe heavy duty wire rope thimbles in North America.

Not only is Chant expanding its facility, Chant’s executive team is increasing to manage this growth. The ownership transition was completed in 2012 with Philip Chant now the President and owner. Jules DiRienzo, has stepped into the position of Vice President of Operations and Patrick Shire has been promoted to Vice President of Sales and Marketing. David A. Crane, is now the Senior Mechanical Engineer to round out the Engineering department.

WSTDA Board Promotes New Executive Director

The WSTDA management staff team is now led by Kathleen A. (Kathy) DeMarco, recently appointed Executive Director for the association with the approval of the WSTDA Board of Directors. Fred Stringfellow, CAE, formerly the WSTDA Executive Director, will remain part of the WSTDA staff team as WSTDA’s Management Liaison.

“I’m grateful for the confidence that the WSTDA Board has placed in me to carry out the responsibilities of the Executive Director,” said Kathy DeMarco. “I’ve been working alongside Fred for over a year as Associate Director for WSTDA, and am now looking forward to expanding my role with the organization and leading our WSTDA staff team.”

WSTDA is managed by Stringfellow Management Group (SMG), an AMC Institute-Accredited Association Management Company based in Bel Air, MD. SMG provides a staff team that also includes a financial director, meetings manager, and association coordinators. The SMG staff has been serving WSTDA since 2002.

WSTDA Approaches 40th Anniversary; Share Your Favorite WSTDA Memories

In preparation for WSTDA’s 40th anniversary in 2013, which will be celebrated in beautiful Napa, California, we are compiling photos illustrating the history of the organization. If you have any convention or WSTDA community photos you would like to share, please send them to us so that we can share them at the meeting.

Please let us know if you are sending us copies of your photos that we can keep, or if you will need your photos or disks returned. Please label the photos with names, year, place, or other descriptions with as much detail as you can.
